We help at home
Care in the family home — a few hours of breathing space for parents, and joy and variety for the children.
Support the projectParents make a symbolic contribution of just HUF 500 per hour.
Support where it matters most.
Foundation families can receive care in their own homes. The service is available on weekdays, weekends and public holidays by prior agreement between the family and helper.
Our goal is to make the service continuously available, more frequent when needed and affordable to families for only a minimal, symbolic contribution.
We manage every detail behind the service.
The service was preceded by a needs assessment supported by the Hungarian national advocacy association for people with multiple disabilities.
A safe place where children can stay with us even for one night.
This would provide genuine respite and ensure reliable support for families during a health problem or an unexpected life situation.
Support becomes connection, and connection becomes community.

“They give me time, and Zsófi moments of joy.”
Nóra Tremmel-Kovács · foundation director and parent
Nóra’s reflections:
For more than a year now, whenever life becomes overwhelming, the helpers have regularly come to help. They give me time to steady things, and give Zsófi joyful moments—the pleasure of play that lately I have not been able to give her myself.
Zsófi’s daily rhythm changed and our time became very limited. With so little time, choices have to be made. I chose movement therapy so that her body can feel comfortable for her as soon as possible; right now it does not always feel that way. Sometimes she is less active with the helpers too. Something is always changing, and we constantly have to adapt.
Our parents—the grandparents—can carry less of the burden now, so we needed another direction and a change. We needed We Help at Home. We created it for ourselves, first from a grant. It was not easy and we needed help. Then came donations, another grant, fundraising, more support and more fundraising.
We always have to work for it, and we have always had to add funding from 1% income-tax designations so that parents pay only a minimal HUF 500 per hour. The foundation covers the greater part of the helpers’ wages and all related costs.
For more than a year, 15 helpers have made this possible for nearly 25 families: a few hours each month in their own homes, a little breathing space, calm and support. For the children it brings joy and variety. They are with us day and night, 365 days a year; they too need a little space without us.
For more than a year we have operated an essential and unique service without state normative funding, through our own efforts. We understand our own situation best, and when we have a need, we act on it—together, because together it is easier. That is why the foundation exists: a place where we work voluntarily for ourselves and for our children, who have the greatest support needs within the disability community.
From helpers and parents
Through the We Help at Home project, I look after Violka and we regularly spend time together. She always brightens ordinary weekdays: she is funny, honest and open. Time with her is always joyful and makes me feel a little like a child again. Even after a tiring workday, I look forward to seeing her. It also feels good to know that her parents gain a few free hours to recharge or attend to their own needs.
I love this work because I feel that I can offer real help to families. It brings me joy to make their everyday lives a little easier through my presence and support. It is wonderful to see the children open up as we get to know one another and build trust. Every child is different, so I also learn and grow beside them, both professionally and personally. As a single parent, the additional income is helpful too, but what makes this work truly valuable is the families’ trust, the feeling that they rely on me and that I can be part of the children’s development.
I consider We Help at Home an extremely valuable program and I am grateful to be part of it. Time with the children is always meaningful and instructive, bringing new experiences and opportunities to connect. They receive attention and support, while we learn from them about patience, acceptance and caring for one another. As a special-education student, it is especially important for me to gain experience in situations where the whole family receives attention, not only the individual. One of the program’s greatest values is that while we care for the children and young people, parents can recharge, rest or simply have time for themselves. This can make an enormous difference, because taking a break is often difficult alongside daily care responsibilities. The program reminds me how important a supportive community, genuine attention and occasional respite are for families.
I was very happy to have this opportunity because unfortunately I have no family support. I mainly use the service when I would like to attend a concert or the theatre. Our helper is very flexible and connected with my daughter from their first meeting.
I am deeply grateful to the foundation and the helpers for creating this wonderful program, repeatedly finding ways to continue it and helping us parents get out for a while. Since the program began, I have been able to spend more time on myself, rest or enjoy myself—things that had been sorely missing from my life. Thank you so much!
Together we keep it sustainable.
